What is a Spanish Immersion Program?
Spanish Immersion is a program available to students who will be entering Kindergarten at EE Miller.  Through this program students will learn to understand, speak, read and write in Spanish as well as in English.  After completing kindergarten, students may continue to be enrolled in Spanish Immersion classes through the fifth grade.
How does a Spanish Immersion Program work?
In the Kindergarten classrooms using this model, all regular classroom instruction is taught by a teacher who is fluent in Spanish. Resource classes in Art, Music, Media, Guidance, Computers, Physical Education, and Literacy are taught in English.  Children are encouraged  to use Spanish vocabulary and expressions in their speech. Parents are advised to encourage reading in English at home.
All Spanish Immersion students are taught the same North Carolina state standards as other schools in Cumberland County. The curriculum  prepares our students to achieve and to perform well on State assessments, which are administered in English.
Students will benefit by . . .
  • gaining exposure to other cultures and languages
  • becoming bilingual and bi-literate
  • improving self-esteem
  • achieving academically
  • enjoying future career advantages
  • preparing to meet the challenges of a global society
This program may be right for your child if . .
  • you value bilingualism, bi-literacy, and diversity
  • your child has a strong foundation in English
  • your child  needs additional challenges
  • you want your child to have an edge in tomorrow’s market economy
  • you are willing to make a long-term commitment to the program
